AN INTERVIEW WITH POMPADOUR COUTURE LINGERIE
So you might have found the dress, but have you thought about what you'll be wearing underneath to complete your bridal ensemble? We were delighted to interview the very lovely Georgia Feeley of Pompadour Couture Lingerie to discuss top tips and no-no's when choosing foundation garments for your wedding, as well as something special for your honeymoon.
Please share a little bit about Pompadour Couture Lingerie? Pompadour is a luxury lingerie brand handmade in Nottinghamshire and Hertfordshire. We create bespoke and limited edition pieces for Bridal, bridesmaid, honeymoon and beyond. Our passion is to create unique, luxurious, heirloom lingerie that a woman feels sexy and sensual wearing. Our vintage pieces are truly unique as they use vintage jewellery that can be removed and worn again and again. Perhaps for anniversaries or other special occasions?
Describe the Pompadour Couture Lingerie bride? A confident woman who knows what she likes and what her partner likes to see her in! She has a nod to tradition but is daring to add a twist of the new. A woman who understands quality and wishes to lead by example rather then follow the crowd.
What inspires you to create a certain design? I am inspired by vintage jewellery, exquisite lace, a beautifully designed gown, even a captivating interior. So many things inspire me and I am always on the search for new and interesting techniques and fabrics. I always like to see what bridal gown designers are creating as my designs need to compliment what is being shown to Brides each season.
When would you advise brides to purchase their bridal underwear? As soon as they have found 'The One' ! Once you have chosen your dress your thoughts should be: How can I compliment both the dress and my figure? And not being afraid to mix and match. If your dress is strapless or has a low back then a certain bra is required; if you see a completely different pair of knickers by another brand then why shouldn't you go with that? When we put a collection together we always have the idea that different garters can be worn with different knickers.. Why wear exactly what the model is wearing?!
We are also seeing a lot of our brides choosing a different lingerie set to change into later on in the evening once the couple retire to their marital chamber.
What is your top tip when buying bridal underwear? Lingerie is like the foundation to your make up. Quality and comfort are vital components to your choice... But they need to look heavenly - this is your Wedding Day!
What is your top wedding lingerie “no-no”? Don't leave trying on your lingerie with your gown to the day of your wedding. Take your lingerie to your fittings.
Could you tell us the tradition behind the bride’s garter? In history, garters were strips of leather or heavy cloth tied around one's leg to hold up stockings or socks, these were worn by men and women. During the 18th to 20th century they were worn just below the knee.
Garters were popular in the 1930's and 1940's as a convenient way to carry valuables in place of a small purse.
In weddings, superstition believed that a piece of a brides gown would bring good luck. This ritual often led to quite a brutal and scary moment for the bride, thankfully this evolved into using a piece of the brides dress fabric to be made into a garter. The groom would then remove this piece of clothing and throw it to the single men after the bouquet toss. Whoever caught these would be the next to marry. In modern day America this public display of tradition is maintained with the bride often wearing two garters one to be tossed the other for the groom to remove in private. The British being more reserved wait to remove the garter until they are left alone in their marital chamber.
How can a bride order a bespoke garter, or couture lingerie / nightwear with Pompadour Couture Lingerie to her personal style? I am always answering requests from brides and some of my stockists with requests for a specific colour to be used and I am happy to accommodate. Some of our brides have sentimental pieces of jewellery they ask to be incorporated into their garters too. If you are choosing one of our garters which are made to a standard 22", if you feel you need a smaller or larger size...please just ask. Our pieces are handmade and can easily be altered to fit at no extra charge.
What items from your collection would you recommend for the honeymoon? Our new 'Grace' collection, named after the ever so elegant Grace Kelly, was designed with a honeymoon or destination wedding in mind. Soft light silk chiffon and chantilly lace embellished with freshwater pearls and silk ribbons.
Do you have any news that Pompadour Couture Lingerie would like to share with brides to be? Our 'Grace' collection introduces our first soft bra to our range. We are also in the process of putting together a new luxury silk and lace structured bra collection to compliment our existing knicker range. These should be available later this year.
